Tiny Dancer by Elton John
Elton John Tiny Dancer Lyrics
Tiny Dancer is one of Elton John's most catchy and memorable hit songs, memorable in fact for much more than being a classic Elton John song.
This song was a popular choice for a number of contestants in various seasons of American Idol, and is also notorious for some people having thought that the lyrics were actually "Hold Me Closer Tony Danza" not "Hold Me Closer Tiny Dancer".
Since his rise to fame with early hits like Rocket Man and Your Song, Elton John has released many now classic albums and much loved hits.

Tiny Dancer Lyrics
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Piano man he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows, the tune she hums
But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly, slowly
Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
you had a busy day today
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand

The Story Behind Elton John's Tiny Dancer
The lyrics to Tiny Dancer were written by Bernie Taupin, who wrote many of Elton John's best loved songs including "Rocket Man", "Levon", "Crocodile Rock", "Honky Cat", "Tiny Dancer", "Candle in the Wind" to name just a handful.
Bernie wrote the song during the first concert tour that he and Elton did in the USA. Maxine Feibelmann travelled with the band on this and other early tours, and did in fact act as "seamstress to the band", sewing costumes, and became Bernie's wife in 1971 (they divorced in 1976). Although the song is generally attributed to Maxine, Bernie claims that the lyrics sum up the whole California feeling of the time:
"We came to California in the fall of 1970, and sunshine radiated from the populace. I was trying to capture the spirit of that time, encapsulated by the women we met - especially at the clothes stores up and down the Strip in L.A. They were free spirits, sexy in hip-huggers and lacy blouses, and very ethereal, the way they moved. So different from what I'd been used to in England. And they all wanted to sew patches on your jeans. They'd mother you and sleep with you - it was the perfect Oedipal complex."
