Adam Sandler Actor And Comedian

Updated on February 1, 2015

Find out more about Adam Sandler and his best movies.

Few comedians who have become actors have the ability to portray a wide variety of great comedy roles like Adam Sandler. One minute he is calm, caring and romantic, the next he flies into a rage. Movies like Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer really show off his talents, but which Adam Sandler movie is your favorite?

For me it was quite easy to make a list of my favorite Adam Sandler movies, but which are is your favorite? Is it The Waterboy, Big Daddy, Happy Gilmore, even Billy Madison, or is your favorite Adam Sandler movie one of his other classics?

Whether it's going back to school as Billy Madison, looking after the son he didn't know he had in Big Daddy, playing a failed hockey player turned golfer in Happy Gilmore, or falling in love with Drew Barrymore in The Wedding Singer or 50 First Dates, Adam Sandler movies are fun to watch time and time again.

Your Best Loved Adam Sandler Movies

The Waterboy (1998)

Who doesn't love Adam Sandler in this hilarious movie about Bobby Boucher, a mentally challenged "mama's boy" from the bayou who is the "water boy" for a local football team who are pretty much bottom of the league.

Everyone makes fun of him and plays pranks on him, except for the gorgeous Vicki Vallencourt, played by Fairuza Balk (The Craft) who teasingly falls for him.

One of my favorite scenes is when Vicki visits Bobby at home, where his Mom, played by Kathy Bates (Misery, Titanic) who believes "women are the devil" does everything she can to make him look even more stupid to try to discourage her.

But back to the plot, where one prank during football practise causes Bobby to fly into a rage, tackling one of the players so well that the coach decides to make him a member of the team to help change their struggling fortunes.

There are some classic scenes, a great cast which also includes Henry Winkler (The Fonz) as the coach, Blake Clark as Farmer Fran, Rob Schneider (Deuce Bigalow) and peter Dante (The Wedding Singer).

I think this is a movie that you either love or hate, but I love it and it's one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies.

The Wedding Singer (1998)

This is one of those romantic comedies where Adam Sandler and the ever charming Drew Barrymore gel perfectly in the lead roles.

Adam plays a struggling singer of a band that plays at weddings. He was jilted at the altar by his bride to be and has been struggling to deal with his emotions ever since.

Drew plays a waitress in the venue where Adam plays, and she is due to get married to someone who she believes loves her, but who Adam finds out is a womanizer who just wants her as a status symbol.

The movie has some brilliantly funny moments, and the ending is one of those feel good ones.

If you love romantic comedies and haven't seen The Wedding Singer, just buy or rent it now, because I pretty much guarantee you will love it.

Big Daddy (1999)

In Big Daddy, Adam Sandler plays a graduate from law school who is in his early 30's and who pretty much does nothing but sit around while living off the proceeds of a lawsuit.

His girlfriend gives up on his lack of ambition, realizing that their relationship is going nowhere and leaves him, and just as he begins a downward emotional spiral, a visitor arrives, which ends up turning his life around.

The visitor is the five year old son of a friend of his, who has gone to China and left the boy in Adam's "capable" hands.

Adam's first reaction is to try and send the boy to his mother, who the boy doesn't know, but he finds out that she has died, and with the father and no other family around to take care of him, the authorities want to send him to an orphanage.

With his girlfriend having found someone else, Adam does all he can to adopt the boy in an attempt to get her back, and he is as unlikely a father figure as you can imagine, leading to some highly amusing and loveable scenes between him and the boy.

Big Daddy really shows off Adam Sandler's more tender side, and it's a great romantic comedy that the kids will also enjoy watching.

Happy Gilmore (1996)

Happy Gilmore is the perfect role for Adam Sandler, showing his ability to switch from a calm mood to one of totally losing it in an instant. It's something he does well, and this is a brilliant plot for someone with his talent.

A hockey player who is both terrible at the game as well as capable of throwing enormous tantrums when things don't go his way, Happy Gilmore is faced with a dilemma when his Grandmothers is about to lose her house because she has failed to pay her faxes.

Although he is horrible at hockey, he finds that he can hit a golf ball a record distance, and he is persuaded to join a PGA golf tour where he hopes to win enough money to help her to save the house.

His manner and personality are just the opposite of what the golfing community is used to, and this leads to some great moments where the previous champion, Shooter McGavin (played by Christopher McDonald) does all that he can to sabotage the luckless Gilmore.

The tour organizer, played by Julie Bowen (Sarah on Lost) also dislikes McGavin and develops a soft spot for Gilmore, helping to keep him in the competition when the officials all want him removed.

There are some great moments, including a fight with Bob Barker (The Price Is Right) and support from the late Richard Kiel ("Jaws" in The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker).

Happy Gilmore also ranks as one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies. He is lovable, you want him to win, and yet his temper continually lets him down.

If you are an Adam Sandler fan, this DVD ought to be in your collection. In my opinion it's a great comedy but also a great golf movie.

50 First Dates (2004)

50 First Dates is another movie where Adam Sandler stars with the delightful Drew Barrymore.

It's a romantic comedy, a genre in which Adam Sandler excels, and this is in my opinion a movie which sees him in one of his most lovable roles, that of a marine biologist in Hawaii who has no problem finding women, but who can't commit to a long term relationship, and so he only dates visitors to the island and not locals.

That is of course until by chance he meets Lucy (played by Drew Barrymore) in a restaurant, and over breakfast he is struck by her beauty and her personality and they hit it off perfectly, Adam believing that finally he has found his soul mate.

The following day however, Lucy doesn't even recognize him, a problem caused by a brain disorder which causes her to lose her memory every 24 hours, the only memories she retains are those prior to a tragic car accident.

The rest of the movie sees Adam trying to invent ways to help Lucy to remember him, and it's a classic Adam Sander blend of happy, funny and sad moments, which will have you laughing as well as bringing you to tears.

Like many other Adam Sandler movies the cast is comprised of regulars which include Rob Schneider (The Waterboy), Blake Clark (Mr Deeds), Peter Dante (Big Daddy) and Jonathan Loughran (Little Nicky). The cast also includes Sean Astin (Rudy, The Lord Of The Rings) and Dan Ackroyd (Ghostbusters).

This is one of those movies that even non fans of Adam Sandler seem to enjoy, judging by the many reviews left on IMDB

Billy Madison (1995)

Billy Madison is one of the classic comedies that helped to put Adam Sandler on the map as an actor in the romantic comedy genre.

Adam Sandler plays Billy Madison, the drunken high school dropout son of a millionarie, spending his days drinking with his dropout friends and playing childish pranks on the staff of the mansion where they live.

When the control of the family business is set to pass to one of the managers Eric Gordon (played by Bradley Whitford - The West Wing, Saving Mr Banks), who is a scheming weasel, Billy has to prove that he is capable of running the business, something that nobody believes is possible.

The matter becomes more complicated however, when Eric uncovers the fact that Billy didn't graduate from high school.

To prove that he is capable of running the business, Billy must go back to school and spend a week in each year group, graduating from that year group, and this he does which gives rise to some hilariously funny scenes as well as some touching ones.

You probably have to love this type of movie as well as to like Adam Sandler to appreciate it, but it's one where he shows a great ability to interact with younger children and to gain their friendship and trust.

For me this is classic Adam Sandler at his best, a great movie with a happy ending, and many of the cast who appeared with him on Billy Madison have gone on to play roles in his subsequent movies as well.

Other Great Adam Sandler Movies

It would be hard to list here all of the movies that Adam Sandler has played a part in, but these are some that I feel deserve at least a mention:

Little Nicky (2000)

The devil has three sons, two of whom are evil but the third is the complete opposite and is a sweet child. When the evil two escape from hell in a plot to cause chaos on earth. The devil has no choice but to send his third son, Nicky, up to earth to help bring his brothers home before they can destroy mankind.

Mr Deeds (2002)

A poet who also owns a pizza restaurant in a small town, inherits $40 billion when an uncle passes away, and moves to the big city whereas you can expect, crooked individuals do everything that they can to acquire their share of his fortune.

Winona Ryder, who is a reporter for one of the tabloids, poses as a girl from a small town in an attempt to try and expose him, but as you might expect things don't go according to plan and she ends up falling for him.

Anger Management (2003)

Anger Management is perfectly cast with Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson, and it extracts the very best from both of their acting talents. Adam is a businessman who is usually very calm and quiet, but when an altercation aboard a plane gets out of control he completely loses it, and as a result the court orders him to have anger management therapy.

Despite all attempts by Adam to remain his usual calm self, his therapist, Jack Nicholson, has a knack of continually winding him up to breaking point.

This is not your typical Adam Sandler movie, but it's a good movie, and if you love Jack Nicholson it's one not to be missed.
